A Beginner’s Guide: What To Expect When Getting a Safe Piercing

A Beginner's Guide: What To Expect When Getting a Safe Piercing

Getting a new piercing can be exciting, meaningful, and sometimes even a little overwhelming. For many first-time clients, body piercing can feel intimidating simply because they do not know what to expect. These days there are countless studios, endless opinions online, and a lot of conflicting information about what piercing practices are actually safe and worth your trust and hard-earned money.

Whether you are planning your very first ear piercing or exploring curated fine jewelry and more advanced placements, understanding the process can help you feel confident, informed, and prepared. A good piercing experience is about a lot more than just picking out some pretty jewelry. Safe piercing starts with education, proper technique, high-quality materials, and a piercer who genuinely cares about your comfort and long-term healing, not just getting you in and out of the chair as fast as possible.

Don’t fret if you’re not sure what to look for! Once you learn the green flags of a professional piercer, the red flags also become a lot easier to spot.
This guide is here to walk you through what the piercing experience should actually look like: from researching a studio, to sitting down for your appointment, to healing your piercing successfully afterward.

Step 1: Researching a Professional Piercer

Your piercing experience begins long before your appointment.

Body piercing regulations can vary widely depending on where you live. Some areas have strong health standards, while others have very little oversight at all. Clients are often left to figure out for themselves how to identify a truly professional piercer. How can you trust that your piercer is a true professional who follows not just the legal standards, but also utilizes industry-standard best practices? This is why doing your research matters.
It is important to research your options carefully and choose a studio that prioritizes safe piercing practices, proper sterilization, and high-quality jewelry.

When researching a professional piercer, here are some green flags look for:

  • Clean and professional studio photos
  • Evidence of continuing education
  • A portfolio of well-placed piercings
  • High-quality jewelry options
  • Clear aftercare information
  • Positive client reviews
  • Safe, professional studio policies

You should also verify that the studio avoids unsafe practices such as piercing guns and externally threaded jewelry.

Choosing a studio based solely on convenience or price can increase the risk of improper hygiene techniques, poor placement, and low-quality or unsafe jewelry options that can lead to irritation, infection, and long-term complications.

Choosing a professional piercer affects far more than appearance alone. Proper sterilization, safe jewelry, correct sizing, and knowledgeable aftercare all play a major role in how comfortably and successfully your piercing heals. Your piercing experience should leave you feeling informed, comfortable, and cared for every step of the way.

A competent professional piercer provides:

  • Education
  • Safe sterilization practices
  • Proper jewelry sizing
  • High-quality materials
  • Ongoing support throughout healing

If you’re looking for a professional piercer in South Florida, Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing is proud to serve West Palm Beach and its surrounding areas for all your piercing and fine body jewelry needs. We are also proud members of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP).

Step 2: Planning Your Visit

Once you find a studio you trust, be sure to double check their operating hours and booking policies. Some studios accept walk-ins, while others work by appointment only. Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing is generally an appointment-only studio, but we will accept walk-ins when possible. Plan your visit accordingly.

During booking, you may be asked:

  • Which piercing you are interested in
  • Your age
  • If you are a minor who will need a parent or legal guardian present
  • Reminders to bring identification and/or required documents

Professional studios often have strict identification policies for both adults and minors. This is a good sign that the studio takes health, safety, and legal compliance seriously.

You may also be asked to put down a deposit or a card on file for a cancellation policy. In these cases, the policies should be clearly communicated and easy to access.

This is also a good opportunity to ask or confirm the expected costs of your visit, so there are no surprises later on.

Step 3: Arriving at the Studio

Arrive on time, clean, well-fed, well-rested, and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A healthy and hygienic lifestyle is the foundation to a healthy, hygienic, and happy piercing. Also be sure you arrive with all the proper identification and documentation you may need.

When you arrive for your appointment, the studio should appear noticeably clean, organized, and professional. The environment should feel hygienic and calm, not chaotic or unsanitary.

You may be asked to:

  • Present identification
  • Fill out paperwork or consent forms
  • Review studio policies
  • Confirm information

Professional piercing studios should maintain separate areas for:

  • Waiting and retail
  • Piercing procedures
  • Sterilization and equipment processing

Step 4: Your Consultation

A consultation is one of the most important parts of the piercing process. Before any procedure begins, a professional piercer should evaluate your anatomy and discuss whether your desired piercing is suitable for your body and lifestyle.

At Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing, consultations are never rushed. This is why we prefer to work by appointment only, to ensure we take ample time to discuss anatomy, placement, jewelry options, healing expectations, and any concerns you may have before proceeding with a piercing.

During your consultation, your piercer may discuss:

  • Jewelry options and sizing
  • Placement considerations
  • Healing timelines
  • Potential risks and complications
  • Lifestyle factors that may affect healing
  • Appropriate aftercare recommendations

This is also your opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns directly with your piercer.

Sometimes saying no is the safest and most professional thing a piercer can do. If you don’t have the proper anatomy or if a piercer does not have the right experience for the piercing you want, it is best practice for them to be honest. A good piercer will be honest about whether they think a particular piercing is suitable for you, as well as their own limitations. Sometimes they may decide to refer you to another competent piercer who can better meet your piercing goals.

If your piercer determines the piercing is right for you, you may proceed with the piercing or decide to come back on a different day for the procedure.

If you change your mind at any point during the consultation, you are never obligated to continue with the piercing. Just make sure to let the piercer know– a quality piercer should never pressure you into a piercing or make you feel uncomfortable for asking for clarification.

Step 5: Choosing High-Quality Jewelry

One of the biggest misconceptions about piercing is that jewelry is “just decorative.” In reality, jewelry quality plays a major role in the healing process. Jewelry for a fresh piercing should prioritize healing, comfort, and functionality over aesthetics– but even then, there are still usually many decorative styles to choose from for a variety of tastes. If you have a specific aesthetic goal for your piercing that may not work initially, it may be possible once you are fully healed. Be sure to let your piercer know what your style goals are so they can take those style elements into consideration when deciding where to place the piercing.

Professional piercing studios typically offer jewelry made from biocompatible materials such as:

  • Implant-grade titanium
  • Niobium
  • Solid gold
  • Implant-safe glass

Your piercer or jewelry specialist should help you choose jewelry that is:

  • Properly fitted to your anatomy
  • Appropriate for healing
  • Smooth with a highly polished finish
  • Safe for long-term wear
  • Internally Threaded or Threadless

A professional piercer will use internally threaded or threadless jewelry for initial piercings to minimize trauma to healing tissue when the jewelry is inserted. Externally threaded jewelry (where the threading is on the outside of the bar) will scrape and damage tissue and is not appropriate for fresh piercings.

A flatback or barbell style stud is used in piercings where a stud is most appropriate.

Butterfly backs are NOT appropriate for initial piercing, as they allow bacteria to fester and can also be uncomfortable for daily wear such as while sleeping.

There is typically no “standard” sizing in body piercing. Just like clothing or shoes, body jewelry is not one-size-fits-all, and a competent professional piercer will take the time to ensure the jewelry is sized properly for your specific anatomy. It is also important that your piercer factors in enough space on the post to accommodate swelling during the early healing process. If your jewelry is not long enough to safely accommodate swelling during healing, you may risk your jewelry embedding into your skin.

Although lower quality & cost jewelry options may seem like a tempting bargain, properly fitted high-quality jewelry can significantly improve comfort and healing outcomes, and ultimately save you money and risk-potential in the event that lower-quality or ill-fitted jewelry causes an adverse reaction that will need to be addressed.

At Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing, we carefully curate jewelry options that prioritize both long-term wearability and aesthetics. Our jewelry selection focuses on high-quality biocompatible materials that are proven safe for body piercing, including implant-grade Titanium and solid 18K nickel-free gold in yellow, white, and rose. All of our jewelry is lovingly made in the U.S.A. with verifiable alloys and include a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.

Step 6: The Piercing Setup

Before your piercing begins, your piercer should prepare a sterile setup in front of you.
Safe piercing practices should always be visible and forthcoming.

Before piercing you, a safe piercer should:

  • Wash hands thoroughly
  • Put on fresh gloves
  • Prepare sterilized tools on a clean tray or cassette
  • Open sterile needles and jewelry in your presence

Some piercers may use pre-packaged and pre-sterilized materials, while others may use an autoclave to sterilize their own materials.
Regardless of the method, everything that comes into contact with your body and piercing should be sterile and/or single-use.

At Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing, we prepare our sterile set-ups using a Sci-Can Statim autoclave that undergoes regular maintenance and routine spore testing to help ensure proper sterilization standards are upheld.

In a professional piercing set-up, you should never see:

  • Reused needles
  • Needles stored in liquid
  • Piercing guns

Piercing guns cannot be properly sterilized and rely on blunt force trauma to create the piercing channel, which causes unnecessary stress to the tissue. A sharp, sterile, single-use needle is the most hygienic and should easily glide through the tissue, creating a clean and precise piercing channel.

Step 7: The Piercing Procedure

Many first-time clients are surprised by how quick the actual piercing process is.

During the procedure, your piercer will:

  • Confirm jewelry selection and placement markings with you
  • Put on sterile gloves, and change them if they touch any non-sterile surfaces
  • Clean and disinfect your skin
  • Perform the piercing using a sterile single-use needle
  • Insert the jewelry carefully

A professional piercer will communicate clearly throughout the process and guide you through each step to help keep you comfortable.

Some pressure, tenderness, or watering eyes are normal depending on the piercing placement, but the process itself is typically very brief.

Tips for the Piercing Table:

  • Try to relax and hold still
  • Remember to breath
  • Communicate your needs
  • Be brave! It’s just a pinch ;-)

Step 8: Immediately After Your Piercing

After your piercing is complete, take a moment to decompress and check out your new piercing in the mirror! You may be feeling a lot– the other side of the adrenaline rush, excitement, and even pride for making it through! Let your piercer know if you experience any disproportionate discomfort or dizziness.

Your piercer should review aftercare instructions with you in detail and give you another opportunity to ask any follow-up questions before you leave.

You should then also receive written or digital aftercare information covering:

  • How to clean the piercing
  • What products to use
  • What to avoid during healing
  • Signs of normal healing
  • Signs of irritation or complications
  • When to return for downsizing or follow-up

At Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing, we only recommend sterile saline wound wash.

Step 9: The Healing Process & Follow Up Visits

Professional piercing care does not stop once you leave the piercing room. A fresh piercing is technically a healing wound, so it should be treated as such. Typically, a professional piercer will recommend follow-up visits to monitor healing and adjust jewelry sizing if needed after the initial swelling goes down.

Each placement heals differently depending on anatomy, jewelry style, and lifestyle factors.

During healing, it is normal to experience:

  • Mild swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Clear or pale discharge
  • Occasional crusting

Healing is often smoother when clients:

  • Avoid touching the piercing unnecessarily
  • Follow professional aftercare guidelines
  • Wear properly fitted jewelry
  • Avoid low-quality products or harsh cleaning methods

Healing times can vary depending on placement, individual health, and aftercare practices. It is recommended you leave your jewelry inside your piercing until it is completely healed, otherwise the piercing channel can close or shrink.

If you have concerns about your piercing at any point, reach out to your piercer as soon as you can. The sooner a potential problem can be addressed, the better. Your piercer should be there to support you throughout the lifetime of your piercing.

At Shorty’s Fine Jewelry & Piercing, we encourage clients to return for follow-up visits, downsizing appointments, and reach out to us with troubleshooting questions throughout the healing process. We offer several ways for clients to reach us: including phone, email, and social media messaging.

Step 10: Long-Term Jewelry & Piercing Care

Healing takes time and patience– but once your piercing is healed, you can begin exploring different jewelry styles or upgrade to more decorative fine body jewelry options.

However, quality still matters even after healing.

Professional-grade jewelry with smooth finishes and biocompatible materials can help:

  • Prevent irritation
  • Improve long-term comfort
  • Reduce damage to the piercing channel
  • Support healthy wear over time

Your piercer or jewelry specialist can help guide you toward jewelry choices that match both your anatomy and personal style.

After healing, many piercings can still shrink or even close if jewelry is left out for too long. Be mindful of how long you leave jewelry out. A piercing that shrinks may be able to be tapered back open, but a piercing that completely closes will need to be re-pierced.
