Sometimes saying no is the safest and most professional thing a piercer can do. If you don’t have the proper anatomy or if a piercer does not have the right experience for the piercing you want, it is best practice for them to be honest. A good piercer will be honest about whether they think a particular piercing is suitable for you, as well as their own limitations. Sometimes they may decide to refer you to another competent piercer who can better meet your piercing goals. 

If your piercer determines the piercing is right for you, you may proceed with the piercing or decide to come back on a different day for the procedure.

A flatback or barbell style stud is used in piercings where a stud is most appropriate. 

Butterfly backs are NOT appropriate for initial piercing, as they allow bacteria to fester and can also be uncomfortable for daily wear such as while sleeping.

There is typically no “standard” sizing in body piercing. Just like clothing or shoes, body jewelry is not one-size-fits-all, and a competent professional piercer will take the time to ensure the jewelry is sized properly for your specific anatomy. It is also important that your piercer factors in enough space on the post to accommodate swelling during the early healing process. If your jewelry is not long enough to safely accommodate swelling during healing, you may risk your jewelry embedding into your skin.

Before your piercing begins, your piercer should prepare a sterile setup in front of you.

Piercing guns cannot be properly sterilized and rely on blunt force trauma to create the piercing channel, which causes unnecessary stress to the tissue. A sharp, sterile, single-use needle is the most hygienic and should easily glide through the tissue, creating a clean and precise piercing channel.

Step 7: The Piercing Procedure

Many first-time clients are surprised by how quick the actual piercing process is.

During the procedure, your piercer will:

• Confirm jewelry selection and placement markings with you
• Put on sterile gloves, and change them if they touch any non-sterile surfaces 
• Clean and disinfect your skin
